Horyuji Temple (法隆寺, Hōryūji) was established in 607 by Prince Shotoku, who is credited with the early advancement of Buddhism in Japan. Horyuji is one of the nation's most established sanctuaries and contains the world's most seasoned surviving wooden structures. It was assigned a world legacy site in 1993. Horyuji's sanctuary grounds are extensive and isolated into two principle areas, the Western Precinct (Saiin Garan) and the Eastern Precinct (Toin Garan).
