Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺), whose extensive grounds are situated at the base of Kyoto's forested Higashiyama mountains, is a standout amongst the most critical Zen sanctuaries in all of Japan. It is the head sanctuary of one of the schools inside of the Rinzai faction of Japanese Zen Buddhism and incorporates various subtemples, that make the officially substantial complex of sanctuary structures significantly bigger. 

The historical backdrop of Nanzenji goes back to the mid thirteenth century, when the Emperor Kameyama assembled his retirement estate at the sanctuary's available area and later changed over it into a Zen sanctuary. After its establishing, Nanzenji became relentlessly, however its structures were all demolished amid the common wars of the late Muromachi Period (1333-1573). The most established of the present structures were manufactured after that period.
